Combinatory Letters
A recent trip to the Bauhaus exhibition at the Barbican prompted me to draw what I think is an accurate interpretation of Josef Albers’s Combinatory Letters from 1928.
The letters are formed using only the ten shapes at the top of the image and a space which is one fifth (I’m guessing) of the width of the upright sections. There are anomalies, which are more obvious when viewed on a grid, on the f, k and x due to the single space between the vertical sections. These could be ironed out by shortening the sections, which would defeat the object of the typeface, or closing the gap, which would be unsightly.
